Although I love painting without any primary drawing I also love drawing on its own so when I don't feel quite ready to pick up the paint brush I usually pick up the pencil and draw.

Sketching helps me concentrate and also shows all the tonal qualities of the scene.

Painting outside is a unique joy and sketching the subject before starting on the "real" painting is part of the enjoyment.
